Eyes are our windows to beauty, experience, gratification and the wrapping of our minds around these concepts. Beauty and appreciation are inseparable.However, looking to appreciate is a choice of a look, a looking to find and embrace before the moment is gone. The time we take to make good of this moment is a journey, and through this time, the looking at a piece of art is a maturation of appreciation.
As in tasting a great wine, there is a pleasure in the process of discovering the subtleties and character. The texture and color reveal themselves and much like the dedication of a collector, going beneath the surface gives credibility to personal passion. This is what makes appreciation exciting, giving us the exploration into new places, getting swept away in new visions.

The juxtapositions and comparisons between pieces grow as more works are added to your internal collection of textures. Art is shuffled on shelves and arranged in your mind with individual preference and growth of your experience of beauty and this is reflected in my work: I work in collections, patterns and shapes.

Although my subjects and references are varied, through traditional forms to personal memories and found photographs, I am always looking to give shape and meaning to the collections I see in life and let the importance of the subject grow around this shape. It is a spontaneous outpouring of anti-seriousness, reflected in my love of watercolor; it is airy, it flies with the merriment and joviality of a folk festival. It is a celebration.

As you walk around a party like this, the order which you encounter the attractions affects your impression, much like the placing of feelings and differing forms of expression. During the arranging of my series’, playing off clumsiness and grace, hard and soft, gives new meaning to the paintings themselves; I too delight in organizing my work into patterns and collections and watching what changes occur.
The elemental aspect of the construction of my series’ lend a ‘no-full-stops’ flow to them, crossing boundaries and ideas as I also cross materials through painting into origami and ceramics. The freedom of this flow through processes naturally gives a change of dialogue between myself and the subject. More exploration. More ways of seeing. No beginning, no end.
Beauty is a part of the journey, and in trying to make sense of my art working through it, around it, changing angle, light and poise, I attempt to become closer to the wondrous in life and keep the windows open, ensuring that this is a journey which does not stop.
